Life doesn't just start behind the front door
Projects of various sizes, scales and clients: the building community, the cooperative, the investor and the municipal housing company. For us, it's about living concepts and a fascination with the city, space and housing. Building land is a valuable, communal asset and we must ask ourselves how we can handle plots and public open spaces in a resource-efficient way. How can urbanity with all its challenges – high population density, sufficient light and air, the desire for privacy despite urban density – become sustainably liveable? What value can an urban leftover area have as a place for the urban community? How should architecture appropriately respond to the urban context? Where does the new need to blend in, but where does it create a new identity and centre on its own? How does the ground floor connect with the intermediate space? How does it shape the atmosphere of the place? How can the right balance be achieved in housing through flexible overlays of uses and different types of apartments?
It is important to us to create democratic meeting spaces – with people, for people.

“Wrest living from the familiar!” demanded architecture critic Hanno Rauterberg on the occasion of a laudation at the Berlin Academy of Arts.
We can only agree with him, for our society today is still closer to nomadic than to settled life. zillerplus aims to promote new thinking in housing construction: where will we live in the future, even if only temporarily? Our office seeks to pave the way for new, flexible living configurations. Flexibility here stands not just for multigenerational living but also for typology, spatial design and neighbourhood structure. To make this possible, alternative financing and support schemes have to be developed for new rental and sharing strategies – for the benefit of a vibrant city for all!
