Life doesn't just start behind the front door.
Projects of different sizes, scales and clients: the building association, the cooperative, the investor and the municipal housing association. We are concerned with concepts of living and a fascination for the city, space and living. Building land is a valuable, communal resource and we have to ask ourselves how we can conserve land and public open space. How can urbanity with all its challenges – high population density, sufficient light and air, the desire for privacy despite urban density – become sustainably livable? What value can an urban residual area have as a place for the urban community? How does architecture respond appropriately to the urban context? Where does the new have to be subordinate, but where does it independently create a new identity and centre? How does the ground floor connect with the intermediate space? How does it shape the atmosphere of the place? How do you create the right mix in residential construction through flexible overlays of use and different types of apartments?
It is important to us to create democratic meeting spaces - with people, for people.
“Wrest living out of its familiar rut!” was the demand of the architecture critic Hanno Rauterberg on the occasion of a laudation in the Berlin Academy of the Arts.
We can only agree with him, for our society is currently still nearer in time to nomadic than to settled life. zillerplus wants to push new thinking in housing: where are we going to live in the future, even if only temporarily? Our office wants to pave the way for new, flexible living arrangements. Flexibility here stands not just for generational living but also for typology, spatial design and district structure. To make this possible, alternative financing and support schemes have to be developed for the new renting and sharing strategies – for the benefit of a lively city for all!
