What turns a bunch of flats into a neighbourhood?

Our competition entry for the redensification of the Manzinger Straße residential complex in Erding was honoured with a commendation. He gives a clear answer – community.

The design ‘Herzstück am Haydnplatz’ (Heart of Haydnplatz) builds on cooperative principles and understands sustainability not only as technical optimisation, but also as urban quality of life. Reduction becomes an opportunity: less complexity for more quality in everyday life.

It deliberately ties in with historical concepts of collective living and translates them into the present. Inspired by the New Objectivity of the 1920s, the result is architecture that does not seek to represent, but rather to enable: encounters, participation and equal living conditions for all residents.

We see this recognition not only as an appreciation of our contribution, but also as confirmation of our approach. Architecture has its greatest impact where it strengthens community life and understands the urban future as a collective task.
